How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.

Recent win: Electeds call for safety improvements at Woodside intersection where 19-year-old Nishath Jannath was fatally struck
  • 2026-10-09 · Leadership · AMNY · ↑ helps grade
Electeds pressed Queens DOT to act at 62nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue, where 19-year-old Nishath Jannath was run over and killed by a private garbage truck. They want an inspection now and a pedestrian signal.
  • 2026-06-24 · Leadership · Streetsblog NYC · ↑ helps grade
Primary night shifted power toward livable-streets allies. Streetsblog called it “a huge sweep.” The roundup named winners and losers, not laws or projects. Street danger stayed on the page, not in policy.
  • 2026-06-10 · Leadership · Streetsblog NYC · ↑ helps grade
StreetsPAC dropped its slate before the June 23 primary. It backed candidates who talk about safer streets and less car rule. It was politics, not policy. No street changed that day.
  • 2026-01-29 · Leadership · NYC Council – Legistar · ↑ helps grade
Res 0141-2026 moved to Transportation committee. It backs A.5440. It would ticket vehicle owners when cameras catch parking-rule violations.
