Council District 34 turns loud after 3 serious injury crashes
In 7 days Council District 34 saw 3 crashes and 3 serious injuries. Two pedestrians were hit during left turns while crossing with the signal.
Council District 34 had 3 crashes in 7 days. All 3 left people seriously injured.
On March 13 a left turning driver hit a 72 year old man. He was crossing with the signal at 129 Wilson Avenue. Police recorded severe bleeding and an arm injury. On March 12 another left turning driver hit a 64 year old pedestrian. It happened at Johnson Avenue and Varick Avenue. Police recorded failure to yield and the victim was semiconscious. Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez can press DOT for daylighting and turn calming now. The Council can also advance a citywide 20 MPH law.

How we calculate this
We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.
Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."
These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
