What We Know

A school bus driver turned right from Columbus Avenue onto 67th Street and struck Shirley Shea, 78, as she crossed with the light on February 17, 2012, according to her daughter Susan Shea-Klot's account. Shea suffered severe injuries and spent 10 months in the hospital before dying on December 7. Shea-Klot said no charges were filed against the driver.

A turn at the crosswalk

Streetsblog described the vehicle in its overview as a yellow school bus; Shea-Klot's account identified it as privately owned. In her account, a driver turned right from Columbus Avenue onto 67th Street as Shea crossed with the light. The driver struck Shea with a rear wheel, knocking her down and rolling over her left foot and leg.

A WABC report reproduced by Streetsblog placed the crash around 4 p.m. and said Shea was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital with serious head and leg injuries.

Near Shea's home

The crash happened at 67th Street and Columbus Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side, outside the Eyewitness News studio. Shea-Klot said her mother was only a block from her home.

Shea's final months

Streetsblog reported that Shea, 78, died on December 7 after 10 months in the hospital. During that time, she was largely incapacitated and unable to speak.

What the family was told

Shea-Klot said her father told her that a police report recorded the driver's claim that he had not seen Shea in the crosswalk. She said no charges were filed against the driver. “The district attorney's office never contacted my father or anyone in my family,” Shea-Klot told Streetsblog.
