In a March 2 account, the Daily News cited police saying Steven Castillo first struck Martin in a Honda Accord, then a second driver in a BMW hit him. Police said Castillo left before officers arrived and that surveillance video helped establish the sequence. Castillo was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
Police accounts later described an earlier impact
The official record lists a collision at 6:58 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2022, with one pedestrian killed. Initial Daily News and Norwood News reports said a 21-year-old driver in a BMW hit Martin and remained at the scene. Norwood News said the driver was traveling south on Jerome Avenue and Martin was attempting to cross.
In a March 2 report, the Daily News cited police saying Steven Castillo, 26, first hit Martin while driving a Honda Accord, followed by a second driver in a BMW. Police said Castillo left before officers arrived and that investigators used surveillance video to determine what happened.
The collision was reported near Featherbed Lane
The crash occurred on Jerome Avenue near Featherbed Lane in Morris Heights, the Bronx. Norwood News placed the response at 1657 Jerome Avenue and said Martin was attempting to cross at the Featherbed Lane intersection.
Martin was 60
The Daily News identified the pedestrian as Antonio Martin, 60; the official record classifies the person killed as a pedestrian. The Daily News reported that Martin lived at a homeless shelter in Hunts Point. It also reported that he died at the scene; Norwood News said EMS pronounced him dead there.
Reports identified a Honda and a BMW
The official record lists two sedans, a 2009 Honda and a 2010 BMW, without linking either entry to a named driver. The March 2 Daily News report identified Castillo as driving a Honda Accord and a second motorist as driving a BMW GT5 sedan. Norwood News also described the BMW as a 2010 BMW GT5.
Castillo was arrested and charged
Norwood News reported that police arrested Castillo on March 2 and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
