Jeep Driver Fled After Bronx E-Bike Rider Was Fatally Hit

A Jeep SUV driver blew through traffic control on Metcalf Avenue and hit a 21-year-old e-bike rider. His body was thrown, his bike demolished. A young man dead for someone’s shortcut.

A 21-year-old man riding an e-bike north on Metcalf Avenue near East 172nd Street in the Bronx was killed when a Jeep SUV driver going west hit him on a Sunday afternoon. According to the police report, officers recorded “Traffic Control Disregarded” as a contributing factor. The rider was ejected, suffered fatal injuries to his entire body, and died at the scene. The crash also damaged two parked vehicles.

Police said the driver left after the crash

The official record says one bicyclist, a 21-year-old man riding an e-bike, was killed. Reporters wrote that medics took him to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died.

The official crash record lists traffic control disregarded as the contributing factor for the Jeep driver. A neighbor quoted by the Daily News said the driver was “flying” and estimated that she was well over the speed limit, but that speed estimate came from the witness account rather than the official contributing-factor field.

Police were searching for the woman that night

Both news reports said police were still looking for the woman who drove the Jeep on Sunday night. The New York Post reported she left with a child; the Daily News reported police described the child as a baby.
