Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Pedestrian on East Houston Street

A predawn crash at East Houston and Forsyth
The crash happened at about 5:01 a.m. on July 14, 2022, near East Houston and Forsyth Streets. The city record lists one pedestrian killed and no other injuries.
Police told the Daily News that a westbound driver hit Gil as he crossed the street, then left the scene. Gil was found unconscious on the pavement and later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
The crash was reported in the East Village
The official record places the crash at East Houston Street and Forsyth Street. The Daily News described the location as the East Village and reported that Gil was found on the pavement near that intersection.
Andy Eduardo Gil was pursuing creative work
The Daily News identified the pedestrian as Andy Eduardo Gil, 21, the son of Mexican immigrants. His father said Gil worked at a hotel while pursuing photography and graphic design, and that he was headed to a scheduled photo shoot when he was killed.
His mother, Augustina Cano, told the Daily News that Gil had promised not to leave her side until he bought his parents a home. His aunt Jenny Gil traveled from California to support the family.
Police were looking for the driver
The Daily News reported two days after the crash that police were trying to track down surveillance video as they searched for the driver who left the scene. Gil’s parents told the paper they were awaiting an arrest and wanted justice for their son.
