The northbound collision
Police said the motorcycle contacted the back of a Honda Civic as both traveled north on the Clearview Expressway at about 1:50 p.m. on July 26, 2022. The official vehicle records describe the Honda driver as changing lanes and the motorcycle rider as traveling straight before the collision.
The rider was taken to North Shore University Hospital, where he died. The official record reports one death and no other injuries.
Near the expressway interchange
The collision occurred on the Clearview Expressway in Bayside, near its interchange with the Long Island Expressway. Police investigated on the northbound roadway, and northbound lanes were closed afterward.
A transit worker remembered
The rider, 43, lived in Seaford on Long Island and worked as a lighting maintainer for NYC Transit, replacing faulty light fixtures on trains and buses. John Chiarello, a Transport Workers Union Local 100 vice president, called him “a great guy, a family man, who got along with everyone.”
The Daily News identified the rider as Damian Valerio; Patch identified him as Damien Marines-Valerio. Both reports describe the 43-year-old Seaford rider in this Bayside collision.
The investigation
Police said the 31-year-old Honda driver remained at the scene. No charges had been filed immediately after the collision, and the NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad was still investigating as of July 27.
