SUV driver hits cyclist in Sheepshead Bay; rider dies

What We Know
A 50-year-old driver in a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder hit Edgar Torres-Hernandez at Nostrand Avenue and Avenue R on May 26, 2023. Torres-Hernandez, a 35-year-old Bay Ridge resident, was riding an electric bicycle. Emergency responders found him with severe head injuries and took him to NYU Langone Hospital, where he died on May 30. Police said the driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. Their Collision Investigation Squad was investigating as of June 1.
The collision
At about 9:19 p.m. on May 26, a 50-year-old driver in a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder and Edgar Torres-Hernandez collided at Nostrand Avenue and Avenue R. The official record lists the SUV traveling north and Torres-Hernandez's electric bicycle traveling east; both were going straight before the collision.
The record documents damage to the SUV's left-side doors and the bicycle's front end.
Nostrand Avenue and Avenue R
The collision happened at Nostrand Avenue and Avenue R in Sheepshead Bay. Brooklyn Paper reported that Avenue R had no dedicated cycling space there and that no alternative route with a bike lane was available within five blocks.
Edgar Torres-Hernandez
Torres-Hernandez was 35 and lived in Bay Ridge. Authorities had difficulty identifying him while he was hospitalized in critical condition, Brooklyn Paper reported.
Emergency responders found him on a sidewalk with severe head injuries and took him to NYU Langone Hospital. He died there on May 30, four days after the collision.
Police investigation
Police said the SUV driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating as of Brooklyn Paper's June 1 report.
