What We Know
On June 5, 2023, at about 4:24 a.m., two sedans collided at 117th Street and 111th Avenue in South Ozone Park, Queens. The city record says two motorists were killed: a 64-year-old driver and a 71-year-old front passenger in a Toyota, while news reports identified Tamir Khan, 22, as the Audi driver who police said hit the Toyota. The reports say Khan was charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated. A later Daily News account said a criminal complaint accused Khan of running a stop sign; the city record listed traffic-control disregard for both moving sedans and alcohol involvement for the Audi driver. Public reports agree on the passenger's name, Charles Harris, but disagree on the order of the driver's name, using Inderdeo John and John Inderdeo.
Police said a drunk driver hit a Toyota before dawn
The city crash record places the collision at 4:24 a.m. on June 5, 2023, at 117th Street and 111th Avenue in Queens and records two motorists killed.
Police told reporters Tamir Khan, 22, drove a 2013 Audi A4 north on 117th Street and hit a Toyota Camry traveling west on 111th Avenue. Authorities said the Toyota was forced into a wooden pole and that Khan then drove on and hit two empty parked cars.
The two men in the Toyota died
The official record lists the people killed as a 64-year-old driver and a 71-year-old front passenger, both occupants of the Toyota.
News reports said the Toyota driver died at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center on Monday. They said the passenger, identified as Charles Harris, died Tuesday after being taken to the same hospital in critical condition. The articles disagree on the order of the driver's name: the Daily News used Inderdeo John, while the New York Post used John Inderdeo.
The case centered on alleged drunken driving and a stop sign
The Daily News reported that a criminal complaint quoted Khan telling police, "I was driving" and "I blew the stop sign and I think I killed the man." The same account said police described him as intoxicated, with bloodshot and watery eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath.
The New York Post reported that police said Khan's blood alcohol concentration was 0.08 or more when he was arrested. Reported charges included manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated.
The city crash record listed traffic-control disregard for both moving sedans. It also listed alcohol involvement for the Audi driver and driver inattention or distraction for the Toyota driver.
