Driver hits and kills Joyce Greenberg in Kensington
A southbound Lexus SUV driver hit a 68-year-old woman crossing McDonald Avenue near Webster. Police recorded driver inattention. She died there in the afternoon light, another pedestrian erased by a drifting mind behind the wheel.

At about 1:30 p.m. on July 23, 2023, a 73-year-old driver in a Lexus SUV was traveling south on McDonald Avenue in Kensington when she hit Joyce Greenberg, 68, as Greenberg crossed Webster Avenue, police told the Daily News. The official crash record lists one pedestrian killed at the intersection and cites driver inattention or distraction as a contributing factor. Police said Greenberg was using a wheelchair, became pinned beneath the SUV, and died at Maimonides Medical Center. Police said the driver hit Greenberg as she crossed
The Daily News, citing police, reported that a 73-year-old driver in a Lexus SUV was heading south on McDonald Avenue beneath the elevated F subway when she hit Joyce Greenberg as Greenberg tried to cross Webster Avenue. Police said Greenberg, who was using a wheelchair, became pinned beneath the SUV and suffered severe trauma. Paramedics took her to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
A burial charity stepped in for Greenberg
The Daily News identified the woman killed as Joyce Greenberg, 68. The paper reported that she lived at the Joseph Belsky House, an independent living facility on Lawrence Avenue about two blocks from the crash site.
Chesed Shel Emes, a charity that provides free Jewish burials, arranged Greenberg’s burial after finding that she had no next of kin, Rabbi Solomon Feldman told the Daily News.
The driver stayed, and investigators responded
Police told the Daily News that the Lexus driver remained at the scene. The paper reported that a smashed wheelchair was seen near the crosswalk and that the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating.
