Box Truck Driver in Right-Turn Crash That Killed Brooklyn Cyclist

At about 10:08 a.m. on Oct. 4, 2023, a driver in a box truck and an e-bike rider were both westbound on Clarkson Avenue as they reached Rogers Avenue, according to city records and police accounts reported by local news outlets. City crash records say the driver in the box truck was making a right turn and the rider was going straight; the record lists one person killed and no injuries.
The accounts differ on the impact. amNY reported investigators said Patterson attempted to continue straight but smashed into the box truck as the driver attempted to turn. The Daily News reported witnesses told police the box truck driver struck Patterson during the turn.
The crash happened on a heavily traveled Brooklyn corridor

The bicyclist was near home, according to one report
The person killed was a 56-year-old male bicyclist. amNY named him Emanuel Patterson of Prospect Lefferts Gardens; the Daily News named him Emmanuel Patterson and reported that he was four blocks from home.
Police found Patterson unconscious and severely injured in the roadway, amNY reported. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver remained, and charges were not reported
Both reports said the 26-year-old man driving the box truck remained at the scene. amNY said he was not facing charges as of Oct. 5 and that the investigation remained ongoing; the Daily News reported no criminal charges had been filed.
