Driver indicted after fatal Maspeth pedestrian crash

Prosecutors said Rony Zino, 27, turned north onto Fresh Pond Road in a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup after waiting about seven seconds when the light turned green, then struck Linda Lee Hirsch, 75, who was crossing with a walker and had the right of way. QNS reported that surveillance video showed Zino stopped at a red light and waiting about seven seconds after it turned green before turning north onto Fresh Pond Road. Prosecutors said he struck Hirsch as she crossed with a walker and had the right of way.
The official record describes the driver making a right turn and lists failure to yield right-of-way as a contributing factor. Both news reports identify the vehicle as a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup.
Hirsch was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
Linda Lee Hirsch, 75, was from Seale, Alabama, QNS reported. The outlet said she fell and struck her head on the pavement after the impact, and that emergency responders took her to Elmhurst Hospital for surgery. QNS reported she died on October 20, nine days after the crash; Patch said prosecutors reported that she died in hospital.
Zino was arraigned on a six-count indictment.
QNS reported that Zino, 27, of Fresh Meadows, remained at the scene and was not injured. He was arraigned in Queens Supreme Court on November 14, 2023, after an investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
The indictment included a charge of criminally negligent homicide. QNS also reported charges of two counts of failure to yield, failing to signal, failure to exercise due care and reckless driving.
