Five Mazda occupants die in Cross Island Parkway collision

At about 5:52 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2024, drivers in a Honda and a Mazda collided on the northbound Cross Island Parkway near the southbound Whitestone Expressway ramp in Queens, according to a preliminary police account reported by amNewYork. All five people in the Mazda, including its 24-year-old driver, died at the scene. Responders took the Honda driver to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in critical condition. Police said the cause remained under investigation.
The collision and response
Police said a man driving a Honda and a Mazda carrying five people were involved in the collision. Firefighters and police responded to reports of people trapped in a crashed vehicle. Responders pronounced all five Mazda occupants dead at the scene and took the Honda driver to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in critical condition.

Five people in the Mazda died
The official record identifies the Mazda driver as a 24-year-old man. It lists a 19-year-old woman and men aged 20 and 30 among the passengers, as well as a fifth passenger. All five died.
