A morning crossing ended in a fatal hit-and-run

Early reports did not all give the same intersection or time. ABC7 described the scene as near East 163rd Street just before 5:30 a.m., and an early News12 report said East 163rd Street and Grand Concourse around 5:20 a.m.; city records, Bronx.com and a later News12 report place the crash at East 164th Street around 5:04 a.m.
The crash happened on the Grand Concourse corridor
The official record lists the location as Grand Concourse at East 164 Street in Bronx ZIP code 10451. News12 reported that the Department of Transportation described that section of Grand Concourse as part of its Vision Zero priority corridors, where pedestrian islands, sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes had been installed.
Family and neighbors mourned Martina Sanchez Alcantara
News12 reported that Sanchez Alcantara’s family said the crash happened outside her home and that they learned hours later she was the person who had died. Juana Sanchez, identified by News12 as her sister, asked, "Why did you leave her? She had a family... she was a lovely person." Neighbors set up a memorial in the lobby of the building where she lived.
Police later reported an arrest and charges
News12 reported in May 2024 that police arrested Marck Urena Fernandez, 25, in connection with the fatal hit-and-run. The report said he was charged with second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and reckless driving.
