News 12 reported that police initially believed Lontsman had been struck while getting into his vehicle. The outlet said its surveillance video instead appeared to show him getting out as the SUV began to roll and then being dragged. The New York Post reported that the Nissan's driver was a 43-year-old woman.

The collision occurred at Ocean Avenue and Avenue W in Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay neighborhood. Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that Lontsman and the Nissan's driver had disputed a parking space there.
Lontsman's family
Lontsman's son Mark told the New York Post that his father left behind two sons and two grandchildren, ages 12 and 7. Mark said the family immigrated from the Soviet Union in 1989 and that his father cared for his wife until her death eight years earlier.
After the collision
First responders found Lontsman unresponsive with severe head and body injuries. He was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead. The New York Post reported on April 29 that no arrests had been made.
