Prosecutors allege a high-speed loss of control
The Queens district attorney says Sk was driving south between Exits 32 and 31 at about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2024, when he lost control, swerved across the road and hit a metal guardrail on the right shoulder. Prosecutors say the Nissan spun and rolled, coming to rest on its roof in the center lane.
Prosecutors say the Nissan’s data recorder showed it traveling about 110 mph two and a half seconds before the crash, with no brake activation. They said the parkway speed limit was 50 mph. The official crash record lists unsafe speed as a contributing factor.
Rafid died after being taken to a hospital
Mohammad Rafid, 17, was a rear-seat passenger, according to prosecutors. He was taken to a hospital with severe head and body trauma, declared brain dead on Oct. 15 and died on Oct. 17.
The district attorney said four other teenage passengers were injured and that Sk and other occupants were also taken to a hospital. The official record counts five injured people and one killed.
The six occupants were in a 2014 Nissan
The district attorney described the vehicle as a 2014 Nissan. The official record classifies it as a sedan, lists six occupants and records the vehicle as overturned.
Sk was indicted on multiple charges
The Queens district attorney announced that Sk, 19, of Jamaica, was arraigned on a 12-count indictment. The charges include aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, assault and impaired-driving offenses.
Prosecutors allege Sk drank alcohol and smoked marijuana before driving. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. The charges are accusations, and he is presumed innocent.
