The Daily News reported that Naranjo had immigrated from Ecuador about three years earlier after fleeing gang violence. His uncle, Juan Avendano, said Naranjo was fond of bikes and hoped to join the U.S. Army: "He was really passionate about joining the Army."
The Daily News reported that Naranjo was survived by his mother, Blanca Naranjo, and a 12-year-old brother. His mother said the family hoped to return his body to Ecuador and was raising money for travel and burial.
