Teen moped rider dies after Midwood collision

What police said happened

Police told the Daily News that Jhoan Puga, 17, was riding a gas moped north on East 8th Street in Midwood with a passenger on the back when he collided with a Genesis G80 driver making a left turn off East 8th Street.

Police said the moped rider then collided with an unoccupied Honda Odyssey. Both riders were thrown off and sustained trauma to the body.

Jhoan Puga died; his passenger was critically injured

EMS took Jhoan and his passenger to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition. The Daily News reported that Jhoan later died at the hospital.

The official record identifies the person killed as a 17-year-old male moped driver and lists one additional motorist injured.

Records and press accounts differ on the Genesis driver

The Daily News, citing police, described the Genesis G80 operator as a 71-year-old man who stayed at the scene and was not injured. The official crash record lists the sedan driver as a licensed female driver.

The official record lists three involved vehicles: a 2024 Zhilong moped traveling north, a 2023 Hyundai sedan traveling north and making a left turn, and a parked 2024 Honda SUV.
