Driver Fatally Hits 70-Year-Old Pedestrian on Avenue I
A 74-year-old driver looked away on Avenue I and hit a 70-year-old man in the crosswalk at East 5th. Police recorded driver inattention. The pedestrian took the impact to his head and died there in the street.

A 74-year-old driver hit and killed a 70-year-old man who was crossing Avenue I at East 5th Street in Brooklyn on a Monday evening. According to the police report, the eastbound sedan’s right front struck the pedestrian’s head, causing fatal internal injuries. Police recorded driver inattention and distraction as the contributing factor. It was after dark and lightly raining at the time of the crash.
Broyde was crossing Avenue I when the driver hit him
The crash happened at about 9:33 p.m. on July 7, 2025, at Avenue I and E. 5th St. in Brooklyn. The city record says the driver was going east in a sedan and going straight ahead before the crash. The record identifies Broyde as a 70-year-old pedestrian at the intersection.
Police told the Daily News that Broyde was crossing Avenue I near Midwood when the driver hit him, and that he was just a block from home.
Avenue I has seen hundreds of crashes in recent years

The driver stayed, and charges were not immediately filed
Medics took Broyde to Maimonides Medical Center, where he died. Police told the Daily News that the driver remained at the scene and that no criminal charges were immediately filed.
