Police charge moped rider after Brooklyn pedestrian's death

The collision and the rider's departure
Police said a rider on a blue moped was traveling south on East 14th Street when he collided with Xie in the crosswalk at Avenue U on the morning of July 8. The official record places the collision at 9:38 a.m. ABC7 reported that surveillance footage showed the rider looking left shortly before impact.
The rider stopped briefly, then left the intersection. Responders took Xie to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where he died after suffering severe head trauma.

The collision happened at East 14th Street and Avenue U in Homecrest, Brooklyn. The stretch is lined with stores, and FOX 5 reported that Xie lived nearby on East 15th Street and was taking his regular morning walk.
A neighbor remembered
Xie was 90 and well known in his neighborhood, according to FOX 5. CBS New York reported that his grandson hoped authorities would find the rider and expressed concern about motorcycles in residential areas.
Reports differ on Xie's name: News 12 and ABC7 call him Zhuo Xie, the Daily News and FOX 5 call him Zhou Xie, and CBS New York calls him Zhuo Lin Xie.
An arrest and a neighborhood response
Police later arrested Steven Malcaus, 63, and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and driving without a license. The charges are allegations.
CBS New York reported that Local Community Patrol volunteers gathered at the intersection to help protect neighbors and urged drivers to take care around older pedestrians.
