A westbound driver left after the collision

Police told reporters the woman was crossing Jamaica Avenue near Parsons Boulevard around 3 p.m. when a driver in a dark-colored sedan, traveling west, hit her and left the scene. The official record places the crash at 155-10 Jamaica Ave. at 3:06 p.m. and records one pedestrian death.

The Daily News reported that medics took the woman to Jamaica Hospital after emergency workers performed CPR at the scene. Gothamist and ABC7 also reported that she was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

The woman’s age and identity were reported differently

The official crash record and several news outlets described the pedestrian as a 58-year-old woman. The New York Post identified her as Suzanne Schmeider, 57, and quoted her daughter, Sydney, saying the family was trying to move forward while the police investigation continued.

Early police accounts reported by the Daily News and Gothamist said officials were withholding the woman’s name while family notification was pending.

The New York Post reported that a security guard said the driver sped through a light, hit the woman, hit a bus and continued. The Post also reported that a nearby store owner said drivers tend to speed on Jamaica Avenue after crossing Parsons Boulevard.

The driver had not been arrested in early reports

Gothamist reported the day after the crash that police had made no arrests. The New York Post reported on Friday that the fleeing driver remained at large and that the investigation was continuing.
