An early-morning hit-and-run on Second Avenue
The city crash record says a 69-year-old woman was killed at 4:28 a.m. on March 25, 2026, at Second Avenue and East 58th Street. Police accounts reported by Gothamist and Streetsblog placed the crash at East 57th Street and Second Avenue just before about 4:30 a.m.
Streetsblog reported that the driver of a black SUV was heading south on Second Avenue when he hit the woman in a crosswalk and then turned left and fled. The Daily News reported that first responders found her in a protected bike lane and took her to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where she died.
Espina Bundley was identified after the crash
The New York Post and the Daily News identified the woman who died as Espina Bundley of Richmond Hill, Queens. The city record and most later press accounts gave her age as 69; an initial Daily News report described the victim as 68.
Streetsblog reported that Bundley rented a home unit from Felix Labra, who called her Espy and said, "She was a very nice person." The same story reported that she had been working two jobs.
Police accused a Queens driver in a black SUV
Police identified the driver as Bryan Alexis Guashpa Rumipamba, 43, of Queens, according to the Post and Daily News. The Daily News reported that police accused him of hitting Bundley in a Chevrolet Suburban; the city crash record lists a 2024 Chevrolet SUV with a male driver traveling south.
The official record lists the SUV driver as going straight ahead before the crash. The Daily News account reported that police said Guashpa Rumipamba hit Bundley as he made a turn.
