Durango Driver Kills Cyclist in Hamilton Heights Hit-Run

Police said a driver in a 2021 Dodge Durango sideswiped 32-year-old cyclist Erick Lamont Bowie near West 151st Street and Amsterdam Avenue on June 19, sending him into a parked minivan before fleeing, and Bowie died at Harlem Hospital.

Erick Lamont Bowie, 32, was biking south on Amsterdam Avenue near West 151st Street around 9:45 p.m. on June 19 when police said a driver in a 2021 Dodge Durango sideswiped him and left the scene. News reports said the impact sent Bowie into a parked minivan; he suffered severe head injuries and died at Harlem Hospital. Earlier police accounts withheld his name pending family notification, and a later Daily News report identified him and quoted his mother, Tanya Bowe, calling for the driver to be caught. Streetsblog reported that aftermath photos showed a minivan blocking the unprotected bike lane, while noting that NYPD did not mention that detail in its communications.

Police said the driver left after hitting the cyclist.

Emergency crews took the bicyclist to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said no arrests had been made as investigators searched for the driver.

The crash happened on Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights.

Erick Lamont Bowie was identified days later.

A later Daily News report identified the cyclist as Erick Lamont Bowie, 32. The paper reported that Bowie worked as a driver at Interfaith Medical Center and lived with his mother, Tanya Bowe, in the NYCHA Ingersoll Houses in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Tanya Bowe told the Daily News that she wanted the driver caught and charges pressed, saying, "My son didn't deserve this. I want justice for my son."

Investigators sought the Durango driver.

Police were canvassing the area and looking for surveillance footage that could help identify the driver, the Daily News reported the day after the crash. A week later, the Daily News reported that the Durango driver had fled after the fatal collision and had not been arrested.
