Norwood News reports that NYPD investigators said a 31-year-old man traveled east on East 225th Street toward White Plains Road and struck Campbell as she crossed southbound in a marked crosswalk. News 12 and Norwood News say the rider continued east after the collision. Daily News witness Junior Manes said the rider was speeding, stopped and looked at Campbell before leaving; Gothamist relayed a similar account from witnesses through her grandson. CBS reported that police said the driver did not stop.

Campbell's grandson Rolando Barrett told Gothamist she was returning from Vital Care Pharmacy with candy and fruit and was about three blocks from home. Pharmacy employee Carmen Pichardo described White Plains Road and its intersections as busy with traffic, double-parked cars and two-wheelers; that is neighborhood context, not a finding about this crash's cause.
Relatives remembered Campbell as a caregiver and community presence.
News 12 and the Daily News identify her as Lenora Campbell and report that she was 93. Gothamist also reports that she was 93 but spells her first name Leonora; CBS uses Leonora and reports that she was 96.
Barrett told Gothamist that Campbell immigrated from Jamaica almost 70 years earlier and had lived in Wakefield for four decades. He said she had worked as a nurse and home health aide, enjoyed neighborhood walks, helped her church and local children, and was known to neighbors as "The Original." Her granddaughter Sherice Thomas told CBS, "Everybody loved her."

News 12 reported that loved ones gathered at the intersection Wednesday evening. As of July 7, Norwood News reported no arrests and an ongoing investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad. News 12 had reported on July 1 that police had announced no charges.
