An 80-year-old woman was walking on a sidewalk in East Flatbush on Friday afternoon when police said a 63-year-old driver turned a Lexus RX 350 from Rutland Road onto East 92nd Street and went onto the sidewalk. Witnesses described a loud bang, screeching tires and the woman being dragged underneath after the driver came up over the curb. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained there, police said, and no arrests had been made as the investigation continued.
A right turn ended on the sidewalk
The NYPD told the New York Post the crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. Friday, when a 63-year-old driver made a right turn from Rutland Road onto East 92nd Street in East Flatbush. Police said the driver went onto the sidewalk, where an 80-year-old woman was walking.
A witness, Smiley Adams, said he heard a loud bang and tires screeching before seeing the woman dragged underneath. Another witness said the woman was pinned against the wall of a business. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash happened at an East Flatbush corner
The reported crash location was the corner of Rutland Road and East 92nd Street in Brooklyn. A witness told the Post that drivers often take the corner fast while trying to catch the light, adding that they can end up on the sidewalk.
The driver was in a Lexus RX 350
Photos described by the Post showed a damaged white Lexus RX 350 stopped on the sidewalk, with a broken bumper, pieces of concrete and torn-up tree debris scattered nearby.
Police said the driver stayed at the scene
Police said the 63-year-old driver remained at the scene. As of the Post’s report, there had been no arrests and the investigation was ongoing.
