The crash happened on Centre Street near Chambers Street, steps from City Hall and the Municipal Building. Gothamist described the intersection as the first one cyclists and drivers reach coming off the Brooklyn Bridge and said it had been the site of a street safety project intended to calm traffic and protect cyclists.
Nacato was preparing for his senior year.
Nacato lived with his family in Bensonhurst and was in 11th grade at Manhattan International School, his sister Fernanda told the Daily News. She said he was preparing for senior year and heading to Chinatown to meet job counselors for help filling out summer job applications. "He was a beautiful boy. He was loved by everyone," she said.
Reports use different labels for Nacato's vehicle.
Reports described Nacato's Deepower vehicle differently: Streetsblog called it an e-moto, Gothamist an electric motorbike, and News12 an electric bicycle and identified it as a QS7. The Daily News identified the other vehicle as a black 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by a 40-year-old woman.
The driver remained as police investigated.
The Daily News reported that the driver remained at the scene and was not immediately charged, and that the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad was investigating. News12 reported that no charges had been released as of Thursday afternoon.
