Drivers Ran Over Man Lying in Bronx Street After Fight

At about 3:55 a.m. near College Avenue and East 166th Street in Melrose, police said a BMW driver and officers in a marked NYPD SUV ran over a man in his 50s who was unconscious in the street after a fight; he died at Lincoln Hospital.

Police said a man in his 50s was punched in the head during a fight near College Avenue and East 166th Street in Melrose at about 3:45 a.m. and fell unconscious in the street. About 10 minutes later, police said a person driving a white BMW SUV east on East 166th Street ran over him and kept going. Officers in a marked NYPD Strategic Response Group SUV behind the BMW then ran over the man, stopped and tried to help. EMS took him to Lincoln Hospital, where he died. Police said the NYPD SUV was traveling 12 mph and was not believed to be pursuing the BMW.

A fight left the man unconscious in the street

Police said the man, described as in his 50s, was punched in the head during a fight on College Avenue near East 166th Street in Melrose at about 3:45 a.m. He fell unconscious in the street.

Two drivers passed over him minutes later

About 10 minutes after the fight, police said a person driving a white BMW SUV east on East 166th Street ran over the man and kept going. Officers in a marked NYPD Strategic Response Group SUV behind the BMW then ran over him and stopped to render aid.

Police said the NYPD SUV was not in pursuit

An NYPD spokesman said investigators did not believe the Strategic Response Group SUV was pursuing the BMW. The spokesman said GPS data showed the NYPD SUV was traveling 12 mph when the officers ran over the man.

EMS took the man to Lincoln Hospital, where he died.
