NYPD seeks BMW driver after Bronx bicyclist killed

Police said a BMW driver fled after a multi-vehicle crash near Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue on Aug. 18, 2026, leaving 51-year-old bicyclist Angelo Camera/Camara dead and a Hyundai driver hospitalized; relatives said he was a mechanic riding home from work.

A fatal chain reaction near Bruckner and Longwood

Police told news outlets the crash happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2026, near Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue. Reports said the BMW driver hit 51-year-old bicyclist Angelo Camera/Camara, a Hyundai driver was also injured, several parked vehicles were damaged, and EMS took both injured people to Lincoln Hospital, where the bicyclist died.

The reports differ on key details. Gothamist said police described the driver as northbound in a black BMW M550i and said the bicyclist was in the crosswalk; ABC7 said police alleged the driver sped through a red light and hit two parked vehicles before the bicyclist and Hyundai; the Daily News placed part of the sequence at Lafayette Avenue; CBS described a southbound driver; and News12 described the BMW as white.

The crash was reported along Bruckner Boulevard

News outlets located the crash at or near Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue, using neighborhood labels that included Hunts Point, Longwood, and the South Bronx. Gothamist described Bruckner Boulevard there as the road running below the Bruckner Expressway.

Family described a mechanic on his way home

Reports identified the bicyclist as Angelo Camera; ABC7 and CBS spelled his surname Camara. Relatives told ABC7 he was a mechanic riding home from work, frequently used his bicycle to get around, and had five children. CBS also reported that relatives described him as a father of five and said a memorial had grown near the scene.

Vilmary Martinez, identified by the Daily News and CBS as his wife, told the Daily News he had just said, “I'll be there in 10 minutes, babe.” She told CBS, “I want justice. I want them to find the person who did this to me. They took a good man.”

The Hyundai driver survived

Gothamist, ABC7, CBS, and News12 reported that the Hyundai driver was a 38-year-old woman who was taken to Lincoln Hospital and listed in stable condition or expected to recover. The Daily News reported her age as 37.

Reports differed on the BMW and vehicle sequence

Gothamist and ABC7 described the BMW as black, while News12 described it as white. Gothamist and the Daily News used the M550i model name, and ABC7 and the Daily News reported a 2018 model year. Reports also named a Hyundai Sonata, a Volkswagen, a Lexus, and a Chevrolet among the vehicles damaged in the crash; the Daily News additionally named a Camaro.

Speed and a red light were reported in the investigation

ABC7 reported police alleged the BMW driver sped through a red light, and the Daily News reported police said the driver was speeding and blew a red light. ABC7 also reported that witnesses told police the driver appeared to be speeding before the initial collision.

Police were still searching for the driver

Gothamist, ABC7, CBS, and News12 reported that no arrests had been made as of Aug. 19 and that police were searching for the BMW driver. ABC7 reported police said the driver got into another car before leaving the area; other reports said the driver ran away after abandoning the BMW.
