CBS New York reported that a 41-year-old man was behind the wheel of a black Honda Civic shortly before 1:45 a.m. at 35th Street and Flatbush Avenue in Flatlands. Surveillance video showed the driver leave the roadway, go over the curb and hit the side of a building, splitting the Honda Civic into two pieces and scattering debris. Police said the man was found lying in the street and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police sources told CBS the Honda Civic had been reported stolen after it was left running about a mile and a half north of the crash scene.
A predawn crash tore through a Flatlands corner
CBS New York reported that the crash happened shortly before 1:45 a.m. on 35th Street at Flatbush Avenue. Surveillance video showed the driver of a black Honda Civic go over the curb and hit the side of a building, splitting the Honda Civic into two pieces and leaving debris across the roadway.
The driver, a 41-year-old man, was found lying in the street, police said. Emergency responders took him to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The impact damaged a building frontage
CBS New York reported that the driver went through garbage bags on the sidewalk and narrowly missed a U.S. Postal Service mailbox before the impact. Officials said a sidewalk shed in front of the building needed safety repairs afterward.
Police sources said the Honda Civic had been reported stolen
Police sources told CBS New York that the Honda Civic had a TLC livery license plate and had been left running at Regent Place and Flatbush Avenue, about a mile and a half north of the crash scene, before it was reported stolen.
Neighbors described the speed and the damage
One witness told CBS New York, "A car just flew past me, it literally flew so fast that my whole car shook." Another resident said, "This could've been a lot worse. He hit a building where people live."
