On September 10, 2026, truck driver Milton Williams mounted the sidewalk near Bowery and Canal Street, fatally injuring 77-year-old Ting Jun Ye and injuring two women. Ye was on his way to a doctor's appointment; his daughter, Yong Wong, was among those hurt. Police took Williams into custody after he continued north on Bowery. Police told Gothamist that the driver of a Chevrolet truck carrying more than 200 pallets turned right from Canal Street onto Bowery, mounted the sidewalk and hit three pedestrians. The truck then continued north on Bowery. The Daily News identified the driver as Milton Williams and reported that he was coming off the Manhattan Bridge when the truck mounted the curb.
The accounts differ on some details. Gothamist reported a crash time of about 10:40 a.m. and said the driver struck a parked sedan at Hester Street. The Daily News reported about 10 a.m. and said the driver struck a van and a box truck after returning to the street.
Ye was traveling to a doctor's appointment.
Ting Jun Ye, 77, was on his way to a doctor's appointment. His family said he had been married for more than 50 years. His daughter, Yong Wong, suffered a severe spinal injury and remained hospitalized when the Daily News reported on the crash two days later. Police said the other injured woman, 71, was in stable condition on September 10.
The crash happened beyond a planned Canal Street redesign.
The crash happened at Bowery and Canal Street, near the Manhattan Bridge. Gothamist reported that an August 2025 city plan to widen sidewalks along part of Canal Street stopped at Elizabeth Street, short of the Bowery intersection. A local shopkeeper told Gothamist, "It's a very dangerous intersection."
Police took the driver into custody.
Police said they took Williams, 66, into custody at Hester Street. As of September 10, authorities were investigating how the truck reached the sidewalk and whether Williams would face charges.
