How were these numbers calculated?

We used NYC Open Data’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets — Crashes (h9gi-nx95), Persons (f55k-p6yu), and Vehicles (bm4k-52h4). We filtered records to the period Jan 1, 2022 through Sep 24, 2025 and to crashes located within New York State Senate District 27. We then counted total crashes, injuries, serious injuries, and fatalities, and computed rolling “past 12 months” and year‑to‑date comparisons. You can view the base datasets [here](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/Motor-Vehicle-Collisions-Crashes/h9gi-nx95). Data were accessed Sep 24, 2025.

On May 1, 2025, a 44‑year‑old bicyclist was killed at Centre St and Broome St. On Oct 28, 2024, a 54‑year‑old woman crossing with the signal was killed at Crosby St and Spring St. On Jul 4, 2024, four pedestrians were killed at Jackson St and Water St. All are recorded in NYC Open Data crash records.

Police told the Daily News that Gabriel Nacato, 17, was riding a Deepower e-moto bike on Centre Street near Chambers Street on the morning of July 29, 2026, when he and a 40-year-old woman driving a 2008 black Chevy Tahoe collided while heading in the same direction. Nacato died at the scene. The driver remained there and was not immediately charged, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating. Police said the bike had a 960-watt motor and could travel up to 30 mph; the Daily News noted state and city limits on higher-powered or faster e-mobility devices.

How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
